Assignment Brief: This project explores the design and construction of a modular typeface system. Using a grid-based approach, the assignment challenges you to develop a minimum of 26 characters—either uppercase, lowercase, or a unicase hybrid—constructed through rational, repeatable forms.
Letterforms must be built from modular components, with parts of letters reused across the alphabet. Traditional curves and diagonals are replaced with rectilinear or gridded elements.
The use of hand lettering or pre-existing typefaces is not permitted; all forms must be uniquely constructed within your system. Starting on a grid of squares or dots, the design process involves iteration, refinement, and systemization.
Once a set of forms emerges, that system becomes the foundation for developing the full alphabet. Work is completed in Adobe Illustrator using the Creative Cloud Library to store and manage modular components throughout the process.
